Motor Vehicle Insurance -- Term of Third-Party Insurance -- Enhanced by One Year
(i) Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, S.146 -- Motor Vehicle Insurance -- Term of Third-Party Insurance -- The mandatory term of third-party insurance for new cars stands enhanced from three years to four years, and for new two-wheelers from five years to six years. Despite an earlier direction issued eight years ago fixing the shorter terms, a large number of vehicles continue to remain uninsured, and enhancement of the term serves the interest of road safety. (ii) Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, S.146 -- Motor Vehicle Insurance -- Enforcement of Mandatory Coverage -- Compliance with mandatory third-party insurance is to be secured through integration of Automatic Number Plate Recognition cameras with the Insurance Information Bureau database and the VAHAN portal, linkage of fuel supply to valid insurance status, and equipping police personnel with handheld devices for real-time verification and issuance of challans, so that uninsured vehicles are detected and victims of road accidents are not left without recourse.
