Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023, S.173 -- Registration of FIR -- Missing Person Irrespective of Age or Gender -- The direction for immediate registration of an FIR on receiving information of a missing person covers every person, whether adult or child, male or female. The word "person" cannot be read down to mean only children. Police cannot await a preliminary enquiry or leave the search to family members before registering the FIR. Non-compliance by States and Union Territories exposes the concerned Chief Secretary and Director General of Police to contempt proceedings.
