Prolonged separation of parties amounting to irretrievable breakdown of marriage falls within the ambit of "mental cruelty" under Section 13(1)(ia) of the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955. Where marital discord has reached a point of no remedy and relations have grown irreconcilable, continuation of a dead marital relationship serves no purpose. Financial instability causing mental anxiety also falls within mental cruelty.
