Contempt of Court -- Knowledge of Court Order Sufficient to Attract Contempt Liability, Even Against Non-Parties
Contempt jurisdiction extends beyond parties named in a judgment. A third party who has knowledge of a court order and knowingly assists in its non-compliance, or whose conduct frustrates its enforcement, can be held liable for contempt. Liability arises not from formal party status but from conduct that undermines judicial authority. An authority forming part of the implementation chain cannot escape liability by pleading it was not originally impleaded. If compliance is considered impracticable, the remedy lies in seeking clarification or modification — not inaction.
