In cases resting on circumstantial evidence, every link in the chain must be proved beyond reasonable doubt. Strong suspicion — even arising from a strained marital relationship or addiction to alcohol — cannot substitute for proof. Failure to examine a material eyewitness, particularly one identified during investigation, constitutes a serious lapse and weakens the prosecution's case.
